In April and August of 2018, two UK Imams, Ahmad Ali and Yusuf Motala respectively, were guest speakers invited by the Islamic Society of Toronto Masjid Dar Us Salaam mosque, located at 4 Thorncliffe Park Drive in Toronto, Ontario.
Included in various speeches and writings they have presented were not only statements of the inadmissibility of friendship between Muslims and Jews and Christians (see statement here ), but also supplications calling for the slaying of those who do not follow the teachings of Allah. (see full supplication here )
Excerpt of supplication: O Allah! Annihilate [destroy] them as you annihilated [destroyed] Aad and Thamud [ancient peoples annihilated by Allah because they didn’t heed the warnings of the prophets]. O Allah! Count their number, slay [kill] them one by one and make them a lesson to their likenesses O Allah! We will let you in their throats and we seek refuge in you from their evils.
The Mosque in question, when approached by voices of concern, had the following statement concerning the supplication in question:
“The text, when understood in the right context and mainstream interpretation, clearly addresses tyrants and oppressors in general. Any suggestion that the language refers to non-Muslims or that the statement encourages Muslims towards violence are categorically false and inaccurate.”
The guest Imams statement and the supplication speak of the same issue, namely, the distinct separation of Muslims and non Muslims and the hostility that accompanies such separation. This was presented by two separate Imams, guest speakers at the same Toronto Mosque within the same year.
