“Islam is a global faith… Islam is a complete way of life, implying total submission to God…”
p. 7
“Islam calls humanity away from the worship of any part of creation to the worship of The One and Only True God. No act of worship or devotion has any meaning or value if the concept of monotheism is in any way compromised…”
p. 9
“In Islam, to believe that any of God’s creation shares in His power or attributes is considered polytheism and disbelief… The purpose of Islam is to call people away from creation and to direct them toward the worship of The Creator alone…”
p. 10
“God created humans with an innate, natural inclination toward the worship of Him alone. Satan, on the other hand, does his utmost to get people to turn away from monotheism, enticing mankind to the worship of creation (idolatry)… Due to the allure of Satan, people repeatedly deviated to the worship of created beings (idolatry and polytheism)… In Islam, the greatest possible sin is to worship anything or anyone other than [p. 11] God…”

Women in Islam

maxresdefault

Much has been written on the role of women in Islam. The religion has been presented as a protecting environment for women, where they are nurtured and treasured. Information, such as what you see below, can be perceived as protective, but when you read deeper into such writings, you see the oppression and humiliation of women,.

The book, ‘Women in Islam’ outlines the role of women and their  lesser intellectual capacities. It instructs how to disciple a wayward wife, complete with Quranic references.

ww

This book is given out freely at the Islamic Booth at Dundas Square in Toronto. It is also given out on our university campuses during Islam Awareness Week.

Although some Muslim women do not suffer beatings or humiliation, countless women do suffer, and the following information can encourage the abuse, oppression and humiliation of women.

In point B below,  ‘Women in Islam’ states that Mohammad never beat his wife Aisha, however, in Sahih Muslim (4:2127), we read that he did indeed beat her and caused her pain.

It must also be said that prominent Muslim leaders in Canada hold the view that beating women (albeit lightly) is permissible.

The following quotes (in italics) are take from the book ‘Women in Islam’.

A/ “Polygamy in the Islamic society is limited to four wives only, the marriages being performed lawfully with a proper marriage contract, witnesses, etc. The man must bear all financial burdens and responsibilities to his wives and children that arise from his marriages. All the children are legitimate, who must be raised and cared for under the responsibility of both parents…

B/ Wife Discipline

Allah, the Exalted, stated in the Glorious Qur’an: “(… As to those women on whose part you see ill conduct, admonish them (first), (next,) refuse to share their beds, (and last,) beat them (lightly, if it is useful). But if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allah is Most High, Most Great.)” [4:34]

Islam forbids beating women and warns strictly against it. The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) never beat any of his wives or servants, as his wife Aishah (may Allah exalt their mention) reported in an authentic tradition (Bukhari #2328). Women are, in general, weaker than men in their physique and stamina. Women are often unable to defend themselves against violence. Although beating of women is generally forbidden, Islam permits the beating of wives in a restricted and limited sense only as a final solution and acceptable valid reason when all else fails. This is analogous to spanking children when all else fails and they must learn a lesson in obedience for their own protection and success.”

In the verse we quoted, Allah deals with the case of a wife who behaves immorally towards her husband’s rights. The treatment of this extremely sensitive issue comes in gradual stages, as we have noticed from the verse. Medicine, or treatment of any ailment, can be very bitter at times. But an ill person will take the remedy gladly and bear the bitterness of the medicine in order to be cured from his illness. The remedy to treat a wife blameworthy of immoral behavior, as we have noticed, comes  in three gradual stages:

1. First stage: The stage of advice, counseling and warning against Allah’s punishment. A husband must remind his wife of the importance of protecting his rights in Islam. This stage is a very kind and easy one. But, if this treatment does not work and proves to be ineffective, then the husband may resort to the next stage.

2. Second stage: To leave the wife’s bed. Or, if one sleeps in the same bed with her, he will turn his back to her, not touch her, talk to her or have intercourse with her. This stage, as noticed, combines both strictness and kindness, although it is a very harsh practice on both. But, if this treatment does not work, then the husband may resort to the final stage of discipline explained below.

3. Third and final stage: Beating without hurting, breaking a bone, leaving black or blue marks on the body, and avoiding hitting the face or especially sensitive places at any cost. The purpose of beating her is only to discipline and never retaliation or with desire to hurt by any means. Islam forbids severe beating as punishment.”

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said: “None of you should beat his wife like a slave beating and then have intercourse with her at the end of the day”. [Bukhari #4908]
This treatment is proved to be very effective with two types of women, as psychologists have determined:

The first type: Strong willed, demanding and commandeering women. These are the type of women who like to control, master and run the affairs of their husbands by pushing them around, commanding them and giving them orders.

The second type: Submissive or subdued women. These women may even enjoy being beaten at times as a sign of love and concern…

Beating, according to the Islamic teachings, is listed as the last and final stage of disciplining methods.

Islam does not permit, allow or even condone beating unless the first two stages are proven to be ineffective. Moreover, beating must not be employed as a remedy, if a wife prefers to be divorced.

The three stages of discipline stated in the verse of the Glorious Qur’an are only meant to be a means of discipline for the protection of the family unit. One form of destruction of a family is when the wife becomes a victim of divorce. Islam aims to relieve unnecessary pains, problems and conflicts…”

C/ Testimony of Women

“Allah the exalted stated in the glorious Quran:

And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women, such as you agree for witnesses, so Allah clarifies to assure the rights of others that testimonies will not be valid unless two men, or one man and two women offer them.

D/ Travel Without a Male Guardian

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said: “A woman must not travel alone without a (1) mahram. No man may enter the house of a woman unless there is a mahram with her.”

For the protection of the person and honor of women, the Islamic rule encompassed in this tradition forbids any woman, whether she be young or old, single or married, to travel alone without (mahram) as a travel companion. This man must be of those to whom she is permanently prohibited to marry due to their close blood relationship, such as a father, a brother, an uncle, an elder son or nephew after he has reached puberty, or a husband, etc. Some people might say that this regulation restricts the freedom of the woman and her basic right of movement. The purpose of this rule is not to prevent her travel but to free her from harm and molestation, and thus to maintain and preserve her right of dignity.”

We find that many civilizations have similar rules about escorting women in travel, but often they allow other than the “mahram” to escort her since they do not differentiate between a “mahram” and a “non-mahram” in their cultures, which results in terrible stories. Therefore, and upon this line of reasoning, forbidding a woman to travel alone, and mandating a male escort who must be a “mahram”, is not in any way a humiliating restriction or insult to her abilities, but, in fact, is an honor that she is served, protected and given companionship by a male escort who has to give her preference over his personal matters and needs.”

Dispelling Misinformation About Islam; The Accepted Dua

book

At the Islamic Booth at Dundas Square in downtown Toronto, Ontario,  information about Islam is freely available to those wanting to learn more. This would be considered Da’wah.  Da’wah is an Arabic word which has the literal meaning of “issuing a summons,” or encouraging people to follow Islam through preaching. The importance of  Da’wah has been emphasized many times in the Quran:

“So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur’an a great striving.-[Qur’an :25 : 51-51]”  q

Included in this information given out at Dundas Square is the book ‘The Accepted Dua’. Dua means invocation or supplication in Islamic terminology.

Following are some quotes from this book. The embolden text is particularly interesting.  A reoccurring theme in much of this material is supplication for victory over a disbelieving people.

p. 5
“Du’a is a great act with great effects on our lives. The benefits are immense and amazing. None can know this unless they have experienced it. And that is the main reason for publishing the book.”
p. 6
“I decided to title this book: The Accepted Du’a, since this is what the book is solely aimed for, to make the Muslim aware of what is needed to have his Dua’s accepted… Abdul Azeez al-Athari, 3 November 2010.”
p. 7
“Introduction of Shaykh Muhammad Al-Hamad…
“Surely the Du’a is a great blessing and a noble favour which The Patron Mighty and Majestic has bestowed on His servants. Such that He commanded them to Du’a and promised them response and reward. The Du’a is immense in value, its benefit[s] are wide in the religion, surely nothing brings the blessings better than it…”
p. 8
“In addition, if he is a (1)mujaahid (on the path of Allah) during that time how much is he in need of calling his Lord!? The One whom for Him victory is asked, the descent of tranquility and firmness during the duel. Not to mention, he asks his Lord for the humiliation of the adversaries and the descent of fear into their hearts, their conflict between themselves and their defeat.”
p. 80
The Authentic Duas of the Quran and the Sunnah (Arabic and English translations)
p. 82

“Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excessiveness [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”
p. 85

“Our Lord, do not impose upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy on us. You are the protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.
p. 118

“O Allah to You belongs the perfect praise, O Allah none can hold back what you give, and none can give what you hold back, and none can bring close that which You put afar, and none can make far that which You bring close, O Allah give us from Your blessings, Your mercy, Your bounties, Your provision. O Allah, I ask You permanent bounties that don’t change or end, O Allah, I ask bounties on the Day of hardship, and I ask You for safety on the Day of fear. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of that which You have given us and what you haven’t. O Allah, make Eeman (true belief) beloved to us and adorn it in our hearts, and make us detest disbelief evil sins and wrongdoing, and make us from the guided ones. O Allah make us die as Muslims, and live as Muslims, and join us with the righteous ones without humiliation or turmoil. O Allah, destroy the disbelievers that deny Your messenger, and block others from Your path, and descend upon them Your punishment, O Allah, destroy the disbelievers who were given the Book [Jews and Christians]. You are the True God.”

I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah

Hurry to the prayer

Hurry to success/ salvation

Allah is Greatest

There is no god but Allah

Muslim prayer at Toronto City Hall speaks against Jews and Christians

The Maghrib Salah/ Prayer includes the recitation of the first chapter of the Quran (Surah Al-Fatihah) at least three times. The following is the translation of Surah (chapter) al-Fatihah as provided by Omar Subedar, Imam at at Brampton Makki Masjid, The Islamic society of Peel, Vice president of Mathabah Institute and CEO & Founder of Bukhari Publications:

  • [In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful]
  • All praise is for Allah, the Sustainer of every creation
  • The Most Merciful and the Ever Merciful
  • Master of the Day of Compensation
  • It is only You who we worship and only You Who we seek assistance from
  • Guide us to the straight path
  • The path of those you bestowed favours upon, not those who have incurred [Your] wrath and those who have deviated

The attached video shows American and Canadian Muslim religious leaders explaining the context of Surah Al-Fatiha (courtesy of the American Centre for Democracy, for more information click HERE):

Osman Haji Madad, Sahaba Masjid. Edmonton, Alberta: “Who are those who earned the wrath of Allah?… They are the JewsThose who were cursed by Allah. Allah was angry at them and turned them into monkeys and pigs.” (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcQHKY-Pfbg)

Muhammed Alshareef is the founder and President of Huston (TX) based AlMaghrib Institute, now operating in “40 cities around the globe,” and boasts of having more than 80,000 students. Alshareef, who was born and raised in Canada, kicked-off the AlMaghrib Institute in 2002, in College Park, Maryland. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42cSYW-P1iU)

In the video, Alshareef says: “Adiyy ibn Hatim [one of the companions of Muhammad], May Allah, Exalted be He, be please with him, asked the Prophet, blessings. and peace of Allah be upon him, he said: Who are the “Al-Maghdoubi Alaihim”? Who are those that evoked Allah’s anger? That made Allah angry at them? And the Prophet, blessings, and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “Houm Al-Yahood” [Arabic], they are the Jews. And so every time you’re reciting Surah [chapter] Al-Fatiha [first chapter of the Quran], and in fact is some Muslim countries they want to take out the verses because they want to have good relationships with Israel… they said let’s not teach in our curriculum the verses that deal of and speak about the Jews and praise be to Allah, the scholars said: what are going to do with “Ghairi Al-Maghdoubi Alaihim” [not those who have incurred [Your] wrath]? Are they going to take Surah [chapter] Al-Fatiha from the curriculum? They cannot take it out… And so because the Muslim youth aren’t growing up on the “Aqida” [Islamic faith], and most beloved people to them are becoming actors and actresses, Jewish actresses, Christian actresses, when they hear a speech about how Allah, Exalted, and Glorified be He, condemned the Jews, they say: What’s wrong with Seinfeld? Every Wednesday at 8 pm, prime time television, they’re watching Seinfeld, and he’s funny. [They say:] Are you telling me Seinfeld is going to hellfire? And that’s in their mind. Because they have laughed and spent very joyous moments with the sitcom and now they cannot understand what Allah, Exalted, and Glorified be He, is telling them in the Quran… If the Jews evoked Allah’s anger, then they did it for a reason, and Allah page after page in the Quran shows us the reason why the Jews evoked Allah’s, Exalted and Glorified be He, anger.”

Omar Subedar, Imam at Makki Masjid in Brampton, Ontario and Vice President of Mathabah Institute: “First I’m going to recite the verse. I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed. In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful. Not the path of those who have incurred Your anger or the path of those who have deviated, who have fallen astray. Now, who are these people? Whom are these categories Allah (swt) is referring to? The first group, the prophet (pbuh) has identified as the Jews (اليهود), and the second group ‘those who have deviated,’ the prophet, peace, and blessing be upon him, has identified them as the Christians (النصارى).” (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP_9fZC1KjI&t=9s)

Musleh Khan, Toronto Police Muslim Chaplain: “Al-Timidhi reports in an authentic Hadith the the Prophet (PBUH) was asked by a companion: those who have earned your anger غير المغضوب عليهم, the Prophet (PBUH) says this refers to the Yahoudi [Jews] and then companion continue to ask والضاليين the Prophet responds and says this refers to the Nasara [Christians] and those who have gone astray…” (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fL00VOTPZI&t=183s)

Younus Kathrada, of Vancouver,  British Columbia: “Pointing specifically at different groups here. As we said, although the Ayat (verses) include all non-Muslims whether they’d be Christians or Jews or other than them. But we speak about المغضوب عليهم those who earned the wrath and the anger of Allah, Exalted, and Glorified be He, specifically here the scholars (علماء) speak of the Jews Al-Yahoud. Why? Well, if you look in the Quran, it’s because they are the ones who are the most argumentative. They’re the ones who knew, they have knowledge of things, and yet they rejected it. So, of course, they earned the wrath and the anger of Allah, Exalted, and Glorified be He… We find that even in the Sunnah [narrations attributed to Muhammad statement or deeds] the Prophet [Mohammad], peace be upon him, they, because they know and yet they reject. الضالين those who went astray, you know, because they don’t base things on knowledge. It’s all about emotion. And Glorified be Allah, the more we think about it, look at today even, you know, if you look at many of the Christians today, they like to talk about, everything is love, it’s not based on knowledge. Nothing is knowledge-based. Everything is emotions, ok, and so they’ve gone astray because they refused to seek that knowledge and they refuse to act upon this knowledge that is present غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين. ”

Sheikh Mashhoor Hasan, explained in a lecture in a Toronto mosque the meaning of this chapter. The following are excerpts from his lecture translated by Abu Umar Abdulaziz: “Not those whom you have become angry on, not those who have deviated. The prophet [Mohammad], peace be upon him, said in Jami` at-Tirmidhi [collection of hadiths, narrations attributed to Mohammad], after he recited this verse, he said: Those whom Allah is angry on [are] the Jews and those who deviated they are the Christians. Why were the Jews called the ones whom Allah is angry on? And why the Christians called the ones went astray? It is very easy, but most of the Muslims they resemble themselves with these ones [Jews] or with these ones [Christians]… The Jews have been called the ones whom Allah is angry on because they had knowledge. They have knowledge, but they don’t act on this knowledge. And those who are astray [the Christians] are called astray because they do actions and they do acts of worship, but they do have knowledge.” (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8U4UUrca9Y)

Website: gloriousquranhistory.ca,Quran exegesis by Muhammad ash-Shawkani: “In this 7th and last Ayah [verse] of [Surah – chapter] Al Fatiha, Allah [SWT] mentions the Muslims who practice Islam, the Jews and Christians… Those who have evoked the Wrath of Allah [SWT] are the Jews [or Israelites] who knew the full truth through Prophet Mousa [Alyhi Al Salam: AAS] but deviated from this truth with selfishness, pride, and prejudice. They thus deserved the Wrath of Allah [SWT]. The astray, on the other hand, are the Christians who deviated from the Message of Prophet Isa [AAS] out of ignorance and ill-knowledge…”

“In his book “Commentary on The Holy Quran” (Volume 1, SURAH AL-FATIHA), Mirzā Ghulām Ahmad, the leader and the founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam, explained verse no. 7 of-of Al-Fatiha.  The following are excerpts from the book (p. 338-340): “All commentators are agreed that those who incurred Divine wrath and those who went astray are the Jews and Christians respectively. A prayer to be safeguarded against these mischiefs, not to be included among those who went astray, nor among those who incurred Divine wrath, has been taught. This must be repeatedly offered in the five daily Prayer services. It is thus clear that this is the biggest and most serious mischief which must be safeguarded against. It should be called the mother of mischiefs… Those who incurred Divine displeasure are the Jews, and those who went astray are the Christians…”

The booklet “Muslim Prayer Handbook For Beginners” has been handed out at the Islamic booth at Toronto’s Dundas Square. Printed and distributed by the Walk-In Islamic InfoCenter located at Toronto (collectfreequran.org), the booklet introduces the daily prayers for Muslims. In some of the supplications dealing with the “Kafiroun,” the disbelievers or infidels, Muslims are ordained to ask Allah to help them overcome and defeat their enemies who are identified as the disbelieving people.

The following are the recommended daily prayers for Muslims in which the disbelievers are mentioned: “Du’a [supplication] to overcome enemies… Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and our transgressions, establish our feet firmly, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.” (3:147)… The Witr (The Last Night prayer) … we also abandon and reject anyone who disobeys you… Your punishment surely overtakes the disbelievers… The most comprehensive Supplication… You are our protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

Polygamy in Canada

muslim-wives-AFP

According to Canada’s criminal code, section 293, having multiple marriage partners is a criminal offence.

In 2017, Winston Blackmore, 60, and James Oler, 53, were convicted of practising plural or “celestial” marriage in the fundamentalist community of Bountiful, B.C., and rightfully so.

These men are from  a religious community of about 1,500 people . Residents from a breakaway Mormon sect, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints  have practiced polygamy for over 70 years, even though it is against the law in Canada.

A lesser known issue with polygamy in Canada can be found within the Islamic community.

Under Sunni and Shia Islamic law, Muslim men are allowed to practice polygamy, that is, they can have more than one wife at the same time, up to a total of four. Polyandry, the practice of a woman having more than one husband, by contrast, is not permitted.

A majority of  Canada’s Muslim population follows Sunni Islam, while a significant minority adhere to the Shia and Ahmadiyya branch of Islam.

Polygamy is preached in mosques by Imams in Canada, instructing Muslim men how to treat their multiple wives in a just and fair way according to sharia.

Following is a quote from the video below. “We need to remember, sharia is allowing it (multiple wives) with the condition that you be just, and you fulfill the rights of each of them (wives) and show kindness towards each of them. Otherwise, sharia will not allow it.”

Canada’s Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan reads the Quran, fasts during Ramadan

33617044_10156780356199411_3582648374412705792_nKirsty Duncan is a Liberal Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North and the Minister of Science in Justin Trudeau’s government.

On May 15, 2018 Duncan greeted the Muslim community on Ramadan:

“Hello! My name is Kirsty Duncan. I’m the member of Parlimant for Etobicoke North and I’d like to  wish everyone a very happy and peaceful Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is a great reminder for everyone in the community to continue to be compassionate to those less fortunate, to be generous to our neighbours and appreciative for the blessings we enjoy. It is also a great time to reflect on the contributions of our Muslim community to our great country. To all those celebrating this month, Ramadan Mubarak, Ramadan Kareem!”

Two years earlier she said the following on Ramadan:

“And I hope you’re having a beautiful Ramadan. And I owe you another apology. Normally during Ramadan I get up at the right hour, I read the Quran and I fast. This year [2016] I haven’t been very good about fasting and for that I’m apologizing.”

“I can say that it (change) was one of the contributions that came from Muslim community in a very strong and powerful way.”

Imam Dr. Mohammed Iqbal Alnadvi is the Chairman and President of the Canadian Council of Imams and also serves as the Amir (President) of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Canada.

The following is an excerpt from an interview with Alnadvi to the online show “The Muslim View” (the video was published on YouTube on November 16, 2015):

Jorge E. Herrera: “And the second reason that you had mentioned was with regards to community involvement. How has the community been involved with the greater Canadian community, within the Muslim community? If that makes sense.”

Iqbal Alnadvi: “I’ll give you near example what happened in election. We mobilized our community with two things. First thing, they have to vote. Right? Because most of the time the survey said that Muslims are not participating in voting and some reason behind it Islamic. They said: Religiously we are not suppose to vote. So we, for example, corrected their understanding and we pushed them to vote. This the first thing. And this time, we see the results, the percentage very high this time. And second thing is that, we do not endorse any candidate, but we see that who is good for community and who is, for example, serving community and also Canadian greater values. So we support them. And this time actually that the change that happened, I can say that it was one of the contributions that came from Muslim community in a very strong and powerful way.”
