On May 15, 2018 Duncan greeted the Muslim community on Ramadan:

“Hello! My name is Kirsty Duncan. I’m the member of Parlimant for Etobicoke North and I’d like to  wish everyone a very happy and peaceful Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is a great reminder for everyone in the community to continue to be compassionate to those less fortunate, to be generous to our neighbours and appreciative for the blessings we enjoy. It is also a great time to reflect on the contributions of our Muslim community to our great country. To all those celebrating this month, Ramadan Mubarak, Ramadan Kareem!”

Two years earlier she said the following on Ramadan:

“And I hope you’re having a beautiful Ramadan. And I owe you another apology. Normally during Ramadan I get up at the right hour, I read the Quran and I fast. This year [2016] I haven’t been very good about fasting and for that I’m apologizing.”

Canada’s senior Imam reveals how Muslims helped Justin Trudeau win the 2015 election

Dr. Mohammed Iqbal Alnadvi

“I can say that it (change) was one of the contributions that came from Muslim community in a very strong and powerful way.”

Imam Dr. Mohammed Iqbal Alnadvi is the Chairman and President of the Canadian Council of Imams and also serves as the Amir (President) of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Canada.

The following is an excerpt from an interview with Alnadvi to the online show “The Muslim View” (the video was published on YouTube on November 16, 2015):

Jorge E. Herrera: “And the second reason that you had mentioned was with regards to community involvement. How has the community been involved with the greater Canadian community, within the Muslim community? If that makes sense.”

Iqbal Alnadvi: “I’ll give you near example what happened in election. We mobilized our community with two things. First thing, they have to vote. Right? Because most of the time the survey said that Muslims are not participating in voting and some reason behind it Islamic. They said: Religiously we are not suppose to vote. So we, for example, corrected their understanding and we pushed them to vote. This the first thing. And this time, we see the results, the percentage very high this time. And second thing is that, we do not endorse any candidate, but we see that who is good for community and who is, for example, serving community and also Canadian greater values. So we support them. And this time actually that the change that happened, I can say that it was one of the contributions that came from Muslim community in a very strong and powerful way.”

The following is the text of a letter that was recently sent to the Huntsville Forester newspaper:

A message from the Islamic Revolutionary Force

Yes we have destroyed your beaches over the winter months with snowmobiles, easily and effectively making them unsafe and all but unusable. We will destroy your beaches from Toronto to North Bay. We have started with the Muskokas and other tourist destinations. Your northern towns extremely easy targets, unlike cities. We do this because you reject Islam and follow the Great Satan. Infidels you allow your women to disgracefully shamelessly parade around your beaches all but naked! A Muslim woman would not even think to do this. Your women are whores with no shame and low morals. Yes we cannot pull off anything like 9-11. But we can destroy your tourist industry, hurt your people, derail your trains, poison your water supply, start devastating forest fires… Infidels publish our warning for all to see. Reject the false religion of the Great Satan. Convert to Islam. Follow the teachings of the prophet Mohammed. Let the Koran speak to you. Either be with us or stand against us. The IRF fights against the disgraceful and unjust religious persecution of Muslim Canadians and of Islamic peoples throughout the world. Hurt us, we hurt you. Anyway we can. Praise Allah! God is Great!

On May 22, 2018 Global News reported that two Bracebridge beaches in (Kirby’s Beach and Bracebridge Bay Park) in Muskoka, Ontario were temporarily closed for the Victoria Day long weekend.

Racism in North American Muslim communities

On May 18, 2018 the Canadian columnist, broadcaster and author Michael Coren tweeted his definition of racism.

According to Coren “Racism is systemic discrimination towards, and oppression, of people of colour.”

Is racism exclusive only to white people? Are “people of color” immune of racism because of their skin color?

Senior imam admits racism “is rife” in Muslim communities in North America because of Arab privilege over non-Arabs”

Hamza Yusuf Hanson is president, co-founder, and senior faculty member of Zaytuna College located in Berkeley, California.

He is an advisor to the Center for Islamic Studies at Berkeley’s Graduate Theological Union and also serves as vice-president for the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies, which was founded and is currently presided over by Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah.

In an interview with Mehdi Hassan at the Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS) conference in Toronto (December 24-27, 2016), Hamza Yusuf said among other things the following:

A lot of the problems in the United States with the black community being shot by the police – we have about 15,000, between 15 to 18 thousand homicides a year, 50 percent are black on black crime, literally 50 pe[rcent]… One black person being shot or white, there are twice as many whites had been shot by police, but nobody ever shows those videos. It’s the assumption is the police are racist and it’s not always the case, and I think it’s very dangerous again to just broad stroke any police now that shoots a black is immediately considered a racist and sometimes these are African-American police officers… It is an important debate though, because I think, you know, we can’t, the police aren’t all racist, we cannot say that…

We should all be against any ideologies of superiority of one people over another people. It is completely antithetical proposition, but we have some of the worst racism in our own community… We have some of the worst racism in our own community. The anti-Jewish rhetoric, you know, here in the Islamic community is horrific.

And one of the things about Sheikh Abdullah Bin Bayyah who is an Arab Sheikh – I’ve never over 20 years I’ve known him, I’ve never heard him saying a bad word about Jewish people ever, and yet I’ve heard in our community so many blatant remarks [about Jews].

Also, do you know what it is like to be a Pakistani in a lot of Gulf states or in India or from Kerala even worse. Do you know? Talk about people, talk about white privilege, what about Arab privilege over non-Arabs in the Middle East? I mean, I just feel like we have so little moral capital while pointing our finger at other people and it actually makes me a little sick to my stomach when I see all these people rising up about this anti, you know, anti this kind of white privilege and all these things and it’s like our community is rife with these things [racism] and our religion is so profound… [Question: How do you deal with that in our community?] by practicing Islam, that would be a good start.

Canadian Imam says Islamic Law to be implemented when Muslims are majority

Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, is a Canadian Muslim scholar, who was born as a Christian in Jamaica in 1947 and grew up in Canada, where he accepted Islam in 1972.

He completed a diploma in Arabic and a B.A. from the College of Islamic Disciplines (Usool ad-Deen) at the Islamic University of Madeenah in 1979. At the University of Riyadh, College of Education, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology in 1985, and in the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, he completed a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology in 1994. Residing in Doha, Qatar, Bilal Philips is regularly invited to mosques in Canada and abroad to speak about the teachings of Islam.

The following are excerpts from Bilal Philip’s sermon (published on YouTube on August 21, 2016):

“Prophet Jesus. Issa [Arabic name of Jesus], peace be upon him, represents the bond or the link between the three last versions of Islam. The third Islam being the true version.

Christianity [is] a distortion, and Judaism [is] a distortion, though in its roots Judaism was Islam as in the roots of Christianity, as Jesus taught it, it was Islam. Jesus represents the link between all three.

Twenty two states in the US out of their fifty states, twenty two of them legally banned the Islamic Law (Sharia)…

The Sharia is the law of God, the law of Allah which is good for all times, all people in all places. That is the reality.

Wherever Muslims are able to apply it, it is their duty to apply it, not to force it upon people as a minority in a country of non Muslims.

We have foolish Muslims, you know, calling for Sharia in the middle of Europe and creating the scare.

We can’t apply it unless we are the majority and the majority agree, then we can apply it, if the majority don’t agree even we’re all Muslims, but the majority don’t agree to apply Sharia to try, to apply it is to unleash bloodshed in the Muslim nation [Ummah], because Muslims will fight you.

They have to be educated. The Muslim nation [Ummah] has to come to that understanding that the way that we deserve to govern ourselves is in accordance with the Sharia [Islamic Law] and that’s what ‘there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Mohammad is the messenger of Allah, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him’ This is what it (لا إله إلا الله ومحمد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم) means.”

Ontario Imam says apostates to be executed by The Islamic State

Sheharyar Shaikh

Sheharyar Shaikh has served as the Imam of the Islamic Society of Kingston, Ontario since 2015. He served as the President of North American Muslim Foundation and the Imam of Masjid Qurtabah in Scarborough, Ont. In recent years, he also took part in Dawah (introducing Islam to disbelievers) with activists affiliated with the Islamic booth at Toronto’s Dundas Square.

In 2013 Sheharyar Shaikh delivered a sermon entitled “There Is No Compulsion In Islam”. The following are  excerpts from a sermon which was delivered in English in 2013 (29:47-31:46):

There is an extensive topic on compulsion in religion (اكراه في الدين). I especially want to look at one aspect – the punishment for apostasy.

When a person in an Islamic State apostasies, leaves religion, let Allah be a witness that I am telling the truth, that the punishment for apostasy is death.

Anybody telling you anything else, I swear by Almighty Allah (والله العظيم), they are lying to you. This is in Islamic Law, if you apostasies, if you turn your back from Islam, according to the [Islamic] Law it is death.

And it is not something new. It is the same in the Judaic Law. It was the same in the Christian Law as well and it has been ever since [when] Islam was there.

If you turn back, if you commit treason against the country there is punishment of death.

If you commit treason against the state there is death. You commit treason against Allah, against the Creator, there is punishment [of death] as well.

How could it be, I ask you, is this logical the danger to life, of someone’s life, is deterred by retributive justice (Qisas قصاص). If you kill somebody, if you want to kill anybody there is retributive justice (Qisas قصاص) in effect.

If there is a danger to someone’s honour, you cannot dishonour somebody because there is flogging. You cannot go and damage someone’s property, because there is deterrence, because you know that there will be either crucifixion (صلب) or exile (جلاء). There will be crucifixion or exile or even worse. You cannot go out and rob people’s property.

Similarly, the greatest thing is when you’re coming to Islam, right? you have now made a pact. This is a contract. Every time we stand up and we say: Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek (إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين) we’re renewing this contract. This we’re taking very seriously. You are alone we worship, You are alone we will worship has both meanings. This has implications.
