Is Brooks Masjid, Alberta Ready to Break Stereotypes?

The Muslim Council of Calgary recently posted an advertisement on behalf of Brooks Musallah masjid located at 820 Railway Avenue, Brooks, AB, Canada.

Brooks Musallah is looking for a new Imam. The advertisement has laid out very clear criteria for what they are looking for in this new Imam with one exception. No gender is specified. The ad can be seen here.

Brooks Musallah is an English speaking mosque and it comes out of the Sunni branch of Islam, one of the more conservative sects. They are also listed as a multi-cultural mosque. Fluency in English and Arabic, written and spoken, is a requirement for the above position.

Another of the qualification requirements for the potential new Imam in Brooks is quoted below:

“Lead by example to prevent discrimination on any basis including but not limited to school of thought, gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, citizenship, political affiliation  or economic status.”

What stood out for us with this particular ad was the stress on preventing discrimination.

Women generally have had a minor role in the working of a mosque, even in the West. There are some women in leadership roles, but these are generally secondary roles and limited in scope.

Could Brooks Musallah be one of the mosques in Canada that breaks through mainstream stereotypes? Could they be willing to consider a female Imam? Would or does this congregation hold de-segregated  worship?

Canada has had some women lead in prayer in progressive mosques, but most definitely not the main stream Islamic community. Below is a summary of Muslim women involved in leading worship and prayer in Canada. Taken from Wikipedia.

Canadian Muslims have been active in the woman-led prayer movement since 2003 when El-Farouk Khaki organized a woman-led prayer with Ghazala Anwar leading for the Salaam/al-Fatiha International Conference. In 2004, United Muslim Association UMA demonstrated its commitment to having women deliver the sermon and lead the prayer.[16][17][18]

In that year, 20-year-old Maryam Mirza delivered the second half of the Eid al-Fitr khutbah at the Etobicoke mosque in Toronto, run by the UMA.[19] Later the same year, Yasmin Shadeer led the night isha prayer with her male and female congregants.[20] – the first recorded occasion in contemporary times where a woman led a congregation in prayer in a mosque.[citation needed]

In April 2005, Raheel Raza led Toronto’s first woman-led mixed-gender Friday service, delivering the khutbah and leading the prayers of the congregation. The event was organized by the Muslim Canadian Congress to celebrate Earth Day, and was held in the backyard of the downtown Toronto home of activist Tarek Fatah.[21] In July 2005, Pamela K. Taylor, a Muslim convert since 1986, gave the Friday khutbah and led the mixed-gender prayers at the UMA Toronto mosque at the invitation of the Muslim Canadian Congress on Canada Day.[22] In addition to leading the prayers, Taylor also gave a sermon on the importance of equality among people regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, and/or disability.,[23]marking the first occasion where a Muslim woman led prayers in an official mosque. In 2006, the former Mufti of MarseilleSoheib Bencheikh, requested that either Raza[24] or Taylor lead him in prayer, which Imam Taylor did during a visit to Canada in February 2006.[25] The prayers were sponsored by the Muslim Canadian Congress and held in a private venue with a mixed gender congregation.[26] In 2007, Imam Taylor let prayers for International Woman’s Day hosted by the Canadian Muslim Union [27]

From 2008, the Noor Cultural Centre in Toronto has included women on their Board of Khatibs, and women and men alternate giving the call to prayer each week. Women regularly give full length sermons prior to the second adhan, with a male khatib delivering the Arabic portion in brief after the second call until 2012. In 2012, the Noor began having women give the full sermon including the Arabic portions.

In 2009, academic Laury Silvers, activist lawyer El-Farouk Khaki and artist Troy Jackson founded the Toronto Unity Mosque, the foundation mosque of El-Tawhid Juma Circle, in downtown Toronto. The circle is gender-equal, lgbtq-affirming, and religiously non-discriminatory. All Muslims are welcome to lead the prayer and give the sermon.[16][17][18] It helps set up similar circles when asked: The first two sister circles were founded in Washington D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia, in early 2011. These two communities are now associated with Muslims for Progressive Values. (see USA section below). Since then, Montreal Quebec, London Ontario, and Vancouver B.C. have established gender-equal/lgbtq-affirming prayer communities with El-Tawhid Juma Circle. ETJC maintains a website Juma Circle where resources for establishing mosque communities, learning to lead prayer, give a sermon, engage the Qu’ran, the life of the Prophet, and his family, as well as reviews of books, movies, and websites.

Muslims for Progressive Values Canada, an affiliate of Muslims for Progressive Values USA, founded in 2010 by Shahla Khan Salter (chair) leads mixed congregational prayers in Ottawa, Canada. Prayers for MPV Canada have been led by women, including Farhat Rehman and by Zeinab A.

At least five countries, including Canada have had women that either lead Friday sermons or attempted to. Read about that here.

“Bahrain (Middle East)

In 2004, a 40-year-old woman tried to deliver the Friday sermon (Jum’ah khutbah) on the last Friday of Ramadan.

She was disguised as a male Imam, wearing a full male dress, false beard, and mustache.

The congregation was able to see through her disguise and she was handed over to the police by the mosque’s imam, Sheikh Adnan Al-Qattan.”

Barack Obama’s Support for the Muslim Brotherhood

by Rami Dabbas
The relationship between President Barack Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood began before he came to the presidency of the United States. Frank J. Gaffney, founder and president of the Center for Security Policy,  analyzed Obama’s first speech in Cairo. Obama then called himself  Barack Hussein Obama, in contrast to his position during the first election campaign, where he was keen to hide the name of his father, Hussein.During this speech, he was the first American president to refer to the Koran as ‘Holy’

He repeated this phrase four times and also used the Islamic term “Peace be upon them” when he was talking about prophets . [1]

According to the Gaffney’s report, Obama had announced that part of his responsibility as president of the United States is to address negative stereotypes about Islam wherever it appears. Obama has explained this speech as an attempt to restore interfaith dialogue. This raises troubling questions about his own religious beliefs. In Cairo, the former president declared that Islam has always been an integral part of the story of America. In an interview with a French network, Obama said that America will become one of the largest countries in the Muslim world due to increase of Muslims in USA.

Gaffney said that Obama lied about his faith and his agenda, and also mentioned that Obama’s speech was a lesson in promoting the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood. [2]

A report released by voice of Russia Radio questioned the US president’s continued support for the Muslim Brotherhood in the Middle East. A few days before the Report, Obama told Congress in his annual address that Washington would continue to advocate a smooth transition to democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, that the waves of the Arab Spring will continue its march in the region over the next four years and perhaps there would be other countries preparing to receive these waves. [3]

Since his arrival to the White House, Obama has chosen Muslim Brotherhood elements in his administration [4]

Mazen al-Asbahi, an American lawyer of Arab origin, was appointed  as an adviser on  education to be a link with Arabs and Muslims in the United States. Other members of administration with connections to the Muslim Brotherhood include Arif AliKhan, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security,  Mohammed al-byari, a member of the National Consultative Council for Security, who studied the ideas of Sayyid Qutb –founder of the muslim brotherhood  ,  Hussain Rashad, the US special envoy for the organization of the Islamic Conference,  Imam Muhammad Majid, President of the Islamic Society of North America,  Eboo Patel, a member of the Obama Advisory Council, Dalia Mogahed, the first veiled woman to serve in the White House and who was appointed to manage the Internal Security Advisory Council,  and Rashad Hussein, whose work focused on national security and the new media as well as science and technology issues .

One of the most controversial elements of the Obama administration is Huma Mahmoud Abdeen who was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She moved with  her family  to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the age of two. Abdeen began working as an intern at the White House in 1996 , and was assigned to Hillary Clinton to work in the State Department in 2010, and because of Hillary’s strong attachment to the world newspapers, reports included of an abnormal sexual relationship between Huma and others, who was accused her of being lesbian. [5]

In 2012, accusations against Huma came to the fore because of her relation with the Muslim Brotherhood. The most important US officials who asked to investigate this matter were members of Congress: Michele Bachmann, Trent Franks, Louie Gohmert, Tom Rooney and Westmoreland Lane. They sent a letter to the inspector general requesting him to investigate the association of Huma with the Muslim Brotherhood, and to investigate the infiltration of the US government by the group, as well as the arrival of Hassan Abdeen, brother of Huma who held a senior position in the US administration. [6]

For its part, Fox News denounced US President Barack Obama’s relationship with his Ex-Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Morsi  and described Morsi the new ally of America. The report pointed out that the Egyptian president was asking  Obama strange requests, including the release of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who was accused by Washington as the mastermind of the bombings of the World Trade Center in February 1993.  Political writer and analyst Michelle McLean explained that Morsi’s visit to the United States and the meeting with Obama is one of the most important things on the agenda of Morsi, and because of doubts about Morsi’s relationship with Obama, the republican congress members demanded an explanation by Obama for his relationship with the radical leader . [7]

Political writer and analyst Michelle McLean wrote that Former US Attorney General Andrew McCarthy said the demands of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood could not be met, adding that US aid amounting to 1.5 billion US dollars would go to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the American people were concerned about security. Every American family had a soldier fighting terrorism and the president of America Obama supports Terrorism.

According to the US network, reports of the arrival of the Muslim Brotherhood members to the White House and their entrance through the front doors, and even the red carpet  to welcome them, were reported to be granting them visas to enter the United States through the US State Department. [8]

Obama’s relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood began before his arrival to the presidency, confirmed by the Wall Street Journal, and noted that Yusuf Nada, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood donated to Obama’s campaign and the network that the US president was receiving illegal donations to the campaign through the Internet. [9]

The network added that Obama was redirecting NASA to enter elements of the Muslim world and setting up a new office at the State Department to be in charge of communicating with the Muslims around the world. According to sources the network described as credible, the White House had secret contacts with the Council on American-Islamic Relations( CAIR ).  Issam Amish, former president of the Muslim Brotherhood in America, met with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi when he was in the United States after winning the presidential elections in Egypt. [10]

The revolution that overthrew Hussni Mubarak had transformed the Muslim Brotherhood from a banned group into a political tycoon, occupying about half of the seats in the Egyptian parliament, the Washington Post reported. Morsi traveled to America in 2011 and received $ 50 million from the Obama administration; the report added that the Obama administration since the beginning of the Arab Spring helped directly or indirectly, the forces that overthrew dictatorships in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya.

Former spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood in the West, Kamal al-Helbawy , proclaimed on the internet in 2012 that the United States will kneel to the Muslim Brotherhood, adding that the Muslim Brotherhood is everywhere within the US administration, in its institutions, the Ministry of Defense, the White House, CIA, National Security, FBI, and others.

The Hudson Institute, a senior defense adviser, confirmed that the administration had decided to work with Turkey and the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria to form a post-Assad government. The World Tribune website said President Barack Obama quietly recruited Muslims in diplomatic posts, according to reports issued by the organization. [11]

Judicial Watch reports that the Obama administration employed Muslims in the US State Department and in posts within the federal government as foreign service officers who represented the United States in more than 265 US embassies, consulates and diplomatic missions around the world. [12]

According to the report, the Obama administration was using new recruits to strengthen Washington’s relations with the rest of the world. The report added that Mark Ward, deputy special coordinator at the State Department’s Middle East office, was the head of the recruiting process. Ward held a 90-minute seminar with the American Islamic Association. These two groups have been linked to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

In a statement to Obama in 2009, Mark Ward said that the biggest challenges facing the American society lack of confidence and lack of understanding of the Islamic world. Revealed documents from the organization Judicial Watch showed that the White House held workshops on January 27 and 28 in 2010, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano met with many individuals and organizations that were said to have links with the Muslim Brotherhood such as Hezbollah and Hamas. [13].  The stated goal of these workshops was to provide leaders of groups associated with Hamas,  the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda direct access to US government assistance.  According to the report, Secretary of Homeland Security and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held secret meetings with these groups. These meetings were the beginning of the Obama administration’s program to develop a new exchange of information with the Muslim Brotherhood organizations.

After the US election, President-elect Barack Obama appointed Robert Malley as senior foreign policy adviser. Malley met with Hamas representatives on a regular basis [14]. There were secret talks with Obama and Hamas. Both sides discussed removing Hamas from the terrorism list. Hamas said the United States had asked to refrain from making any statements about contacts with Washington, and US officials have said that they have no choice but to work with Hamas because of its influence in the Arab and Muslim world. A senior Obama administration official told Reuters that about 400 million was obtained by Hamas since the control of the Gaza Strip.

One of the most important US officials who discussed Obama’s dialogue with Hamas was current Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who traveled to the Middle East with Obama when he was a member of the US Congress. John Kerry, the ex US Secretary of State in the Obama administration  also discussed this matter.

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt played a big role in the January 25 2011 revolution,  and took important roles in the demonstrations that brought down Mubarak. The Egyptian police were no longer patrolling at the Rafah border crossing and Hamas armed elements were taking advantage of this security vacuum and enter Egypt. Hamas cooperated closely with the Muslim Brotherhood in the destruction of public property in order to give the impression to the Egyptian public and global public that the demonstrators represent a threat to the security of Egyptian society and distort their image, while at the same time pomote committees of the Muslim Brotherhood to protect these public properties and give the impression that the Muslim Brotherhood protects the people from the attacks by the vandals .

In September 2013, an Egyptian court banned the Brotherhood and its associations, and ordered that its assets be seized. It was designated as a terrorist organization.

‘Islam is Better than Democracy’ American Imam to Speak in Toronto…again

Siraj Wahhaj Photo: Youtube Screenshot

Let The Quran Speak, a weekly media production promoting Muslims and Islam, is hosting a fundraising dinner February 17, 2019 entitled “Let the Quran Speak Family Day Fundraising Dinner” to be held at the Grand Cinnamon Banquet and Convention Center, Toronto, Ontario.

Among the list of speakers is Imam Siraj Wahhaj.

Siraj Wahhaj is an African-American Imam of Al Taqwa mosque[1]  in Brooklyn, New York. He is also leader of  the Muslim Alliance in North America and was formerly vice-president of the Islamic Society of North America.

Mr Wahhaj was born into a non Muslim family, and was active in his church as a young man. In 1969, he joined the Nation of Islam, an organization notorious for it’s anti Jewish, racist sentiments,  and during that time, he was very vocal in his belief that “white people are devils”.  In 1975, he became a Sunni Muslim under the guidance and encouragement of  Warith Deen Mohammed.

Mr Wahhaj is known for his controversial views on sharia, jihad and the Islamic Ummah. He has been quoted as saying “Islam is better than democracy. Allah will cause his deen [Islam as a complete way of life], Islam to prevail over every kind of system, and you know what? It will happen.” and “Where ever you came from, you came to America. And you came for one reason- for one reason only – to establish Allah’s deen.”

He was also a defense witness at the trial of the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel-Rahman, the former leader of the Egyptian terrorist organization, Gama’a al-Islamiyya, calling him a ‘respected scholar’

He has also indicated an encouragement for physical jihad.

Mr Wahhaj was also a guest speaker at a conference last October sponsored by Islamic Circle of North America called “Carry the Light”.

This Imam is invited to speak at a Family oriented fundraising dinner in Toronto. An American Imam who allegedly advocates jihad,  lauds terrorists, and  strives for a worldwide Islamic Ummah. What could go wrong?

Pushing the M103 Agenda in Canadian Public School Reading Material

The Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People is an annual project of the National (Canadian) Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the Children’s Book Council. This bibliography features K-12 annotated titles published in the previous calendar year,  selected by a book review committee appointed by the NCSS.

An annual reading list of exceptional books for use in social studies classrooms, selected by social studies educators has been released for 2019. This list is extensive, much of it progressive in nature and includes books on alternative lifestyles, discrimination, notable people in history and more. You will find the list here.

What we found interesting is that several of these books focused on or touched Islamic themes and traditions;  Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets: A Muslim Book of Shapes, by Hena KhanOne,  Marwan’s Journey, by Patricia de Arias, Saffron Ice Cream, by Rashin Kheiriyeh, Someone New, written and illustrated by Anne Sibley O’Brien, Mommy’s Khimar, by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, Thread Of Love, by Kabir Sehgal and Surishtha Sehgal;, First Generation: 36 Trailblazing Immigrants and Refugees Who Make America Great, Escape From Aleppo, by N. H. Senzai , Amal Unbound, by Aisha Saeed, Betty Before X, by Ilyasah Shabazz , Americanized: Rebel Without a Green Card, by Sara Saedi , Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree, by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani .

One particular book that stood out was a book called  Ramadan, The Holy Month of Fasting by Ausma  Zehanat Khan.

The introduction to this book is as follows:
”The month of Ramadan offers the opportunity to improve one’s personal and spiritual behavior. By focusing on positive thoughts and actions, Muslims build a closer connection with God and come away from the month feeling spiritually renewed. Ramadan: The Holy Month of Fasting explores the richness and diversity of the Islamic tradition by focusing on an event of great spiritual significance and beauty in the lives of Muslims. Rich with personal stories and stunning photographs, Ramadan demystifies the traditions and emphasizes the importance of diversity in a world where Islamophobia is on the rise.”

See the link here.

Not only is this book teaching about Islamic tradition in the classroom setting, it is being used to teach about and fight against Islamophobia by teaching the ‘positive’ aspects of Ramadan.

Ramadan  Arabic: رمضان‎   is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting(Sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month lasts 29–30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon, according to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths.

Indoctrination of Canadian school children on the most important festival of the Islamic calendar, as well as warning about ‘Islamophobia’ is concerning indeed.

Note: There are no other religious books included in the recommended list, specific to a certain religion.
